The City as well as the metropolitan region has experienced tremendous growth in population and in economic diversity. The major employment industries contributing to the growth include services, wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, government, financial services, transportation, utilities, tourism, and construction. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach combined rank first in the nation in volume.
